Porsche Cayman
The Cayman is a mid sized 2 seat sports car that was first launched in 2006. The Cayman is touted as the coupe version of the second generation Boxster convertible. The name of the car, Cayman is rumored to be an alternate spelling of the name Caiman which is a reptile that is related to the alligator, not the name of the Islands as most people believe it to be.
The Cayman was in development for two years, the first model of this coupe was called the Cayman S. Pictures and the technical information was released but the car was not seen by the public until September 2005. The car has a mid size engine and the front fenders, trunk lid, side doors, headlights and interior are all shared with the Boxster. The body of the Cayman has taken it styling cues from the 550 Porsche Coupe and the 904 Coupe. The Cayman does have its own style large hatchback.
The Cayman has a 3.4 litre engine with 6 cylinders and the Cayman S comes from the Boxster S 3.2 litre but the Cayman has cylinder heads that come from the 997 S’s 3.8 litre engine. The standard Cayman has is powered by a 2.7 litre engine, these power plant engines stopped with the 2007 Cayman model. .
The car had a 5 speed manual transaxle which is a standard on the Cayman and a 6 speed manual is the default for the S which is an option of the S model. Other options available are the shock absorbers, ceramic disc brakes and xenon headlights. The Cayman is not a high performance car and Porsche has no plans to release one in the Cayman models. The Cayman has a limited slip differential and the LSD is not offered as an option in the S because the performance of the S would be way to close to Porsche 911.
