The 987 Boxster, Porsche claims only has in common 20 percent of the parts of the 986, which the two cars are like sister ships from the outside. The base car engine is 2.7 litre which is a 240 horsepower and a flat -6 and the Boxster S is a 3.2 liter engine with a 280 horsepower engine. Actually the Porsche Cayman version was based on these cars.

The Boxster is a mid engine roadster that was built by Porsche, these 986 and 987 were introduced in 1996 as a 2007 model. This was Porsches least expensive car in the entire line and the Boxster was taking over from the front engine version of the 968 which was discontinued in 1995. The early style Boxsters were powered by a 2.5, flat 6 cylinder engine and the 2000 version of the Boxster S was a 2.7 litre engine and in 2003, the styling and the engine specs were both upgraded in each model.
